Welcome
Making clay became my favorite form of art expression after working in drawing, painting, paper making and mixed media. Art education, drawing and painting were my majors at the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University. As an art educator, I enrolled in a clay tile class at Arrowmont School in Tennessee in order to build a tile wall mural with my students. From then I was hooked with the creativity, spontaneity and challenges of working with clay.
My process begins with soft clay slabs, using molds, tiles, coils and cardboard templates to construct 3D forms. Textures, patterns, drawings and painted images are impressed and layered. Greenware pieces are bisqued and then glazed fired with oxides, underglazes and mid-fire glazes. Most of my work I consider sculptural but I also make functional pieces.
There are an endless variety of clay techniques and I love the challenge of finding my voice in clay through this discovery process. Nature, growth and decay, changing seasons, and the accidental are the inspiration of my design process.
